Stress Management
Stress and anxiety are two of the most debilitating conditions of modern society. Not only can they cause unhappiness, they can have serious negative health consequences. On the bright side, there are simple, yet powerful tools you can use to virtually eliminate stress and anxiety from your life, and live the life you have always wanted.
Stress and anxiety are related in that they can come about during traumatic life events, such as an accident, death of a loved one, divorce, moving, or loss of a job to name a few. However, in our modern hectic society stress and anxiety can also result from daily life. Trying to handle things like the workplace, taking care of family matters, earning money, getting along with people, and so on can overwhelm and cause incessant worry.
Being a somewhat subjective state, psychology has difficulty agreeing on one definition of stress. However, just because it is scientifically difficult to pin down, doesn’t negate how much stress negatively impacts our lives. A general definition of stress is an emotionally disquieting and troublesome state that results from influences that are perceived as being adverse or overwhelming. Stress not only negatively impacts one’s well-being, but can have serious negative health ramifications as well. Common symptoms include headache, sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating, short-temper, upset stomach, job dissatisfaction, low morale, depression, and anxiety. Some more serious health consequences are skin problems like hives, diabetes, weight gain or loss, depression, and heart problems.
Anxiety can be defined as a vague unpleasant emotion that is experienced in anticipation of some (usually misperceived) misfortune. It is apprehension, tension, worry or uneasiness that stems from the anticipation of a danger, whose source is largely unknown. Anxiety is worry that has become chronic. Because it is chronic, often the source of the worry is unknown. The person doesn’t know why they are so worried all the time, they just are. Prolonged anxiety can lead to depression, high blood pressure, and stomach problems.
Over time both stress and anxiety have a negative impact on one’s mental and emotional health, and most likely lead to premature aging. There is no doubt that not only your happiness and well being, but your health depends on handling stress and anxiety.
